History

Iraq is home to one of the world’s oldest civilizations. The region of Mesopotamia, which lies within present-day Iraq, was the birthplace of great civilizations such as the Sumerians, Babylonians, and Assyrians. It was also the cradle of the first human empires and the origin of significant inventions such as cuneiform script, the wheel, and many other innovations.

In modern history, Iraq gained independence from Britain in 1932. In the following years, the country experienced various coups and governmental changes, the most significant being the rise of Saddam Hussein to power in the 1970s. After several wars, including the Iran-Iraq War (1980–1988), the Gulf War (1990–1991), and the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, Saddam Hussein’s regime was overthrown. Since then, Iraq has been governed as a federal republic with a democratic system, although the country continues to face security and economic challenges.

    Politics

Iraq has a parliamentary republic system. The President serves as the head of state, while the Prime Minister is the head of government. The country is divided into eight federal provinces, with the Kurdistan region in northern Iraq enjoying greater autonomy compared to the rest of the country.

Political Challenges: In recent years, Iraq has faced multiple political instabilities. The presence of terrorist groups such as ISIS and the influence of regional powers like Iran and the United States in the country’s internal affairs remain significant challenges.

    Economy

Iraq’s economy is heavily dependent on oil. The country is one of the world’s largest oil producers, with approximately 90% of government revenue coming from oil exports. However, Iraq faces economic challenges such as corruption, unemployment, and weak infrastructure.

Natural Resources: In addition to oil, Iraq has vast reserves of natural gas, phosphate, and freshwater.

Industries: The main industries include oil, gas, petrochemicals, and cement production.

Agriculture also plays a significant role in Iraq’s economy, particularly in the production of wheat, barley, dates, and other crops.
